Can we involve our students in research and case writing? Prof. Amol S. Dhaigude | TAPMI

About Amol S. Dhaigude

He is working as an Associate Professor in T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Manipal, India. He offers courses in supply chain management, service operations management and operations research at executive, postgraduate and graduate levels. He is a fellow of the Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIM I), India. He holds a master’s degree in Business Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology Engineering from reputed Indian universities. His research work is published in various reputed international journals. He has presented papers in many international conferences and is actively engaged in research in supply chain coordination, tourism management and services operations. He is profound case-writer and teacher. He was the recipient of various awards including Samsika award for academic excellence in marketing, best outgoing student 2010, best teacher award, and Ignited Minds article writing competition by IIM Kozhikode. He has more than seven years of work experience including industry and academia. He is a marathon runner, an avid cook and loves story telling.

Inkpothub: You are a researcher, case-writer, and an amazing teacher. Your updates on Facebook regarding different cases are quite fascinating. Please share about the journey of becoming a case-writer.

Prof. Amol: I have written more than 14 cases out of which nine are in Ivey Publishing three are in B category journals, one in Emerald Emerging Markets case studies and one in case centre. I am glad that my PGP-1 and PGP-2 students are my co-authors. And it is amazing.

I have a process and it is simple. When the students go for their summer internship (usually of 2 months), they experience different challenges, issues, and problems. To facilitate our students, we have faculty and industry counselors who would give advice to the students on the issues. So, together we solve that problem. Once the problem is solved, we approach the companies, seek the approval to write a teaching case around the problems being solved. 

The students are the co-authors. When they enter in the job market, the case writing experience is a brownie point for the students. They stand out the crowd.

I worked closely with the passed-out students as well. I happen to meet a couple of alums recently. They are in companies like Deloitte, Infosys, Grant Thornton (GT), etc. The students mentioned that the case-writing experience helped them getting some serious projects and they were also asked to write white papers for the companies.

So it’s a win-win. Each stakeholder is getting something.


Inkpothub:  How much involvement students have while writing the case because it has multiple components?

Prof. Amol: I involve them throughout the process because this is generally done after the first year of their PGP. They have had exposure to case reading, case analysis, and other things of cases. So they know what goes into the case. But they are not involved in the writing of teaching notes (TN). But I give them a general idea of TN. TN is generally my forte. The students are primarily involved in writing case story, and dilemmas. I also involve them in analysis to have different perspectives which later is incorporated in the TN.

Inkpothub: What is the process of submission at Ivey Cases?

Prof. Amol: The submission process is like any typical journal paper submission. There is an online submission portal. We need to have the case ready along with the TN and consent from the company. These three documents are absolutely essential. Then if it calls for an excel sheet of student’s version, and/or instructor’s version. We may create these excel sheets but the above mentioned three documents are absolutely mandatory that is case, TN and consent form.

The submission is completely online and simple.

Prof. Amol: I joined TAPMI straight after my FPM. It is very supportive and healthy environment for research. It is phenomenal.

To enrich research output and impact at institutional level each faculty gets one term off i.e. the faculty is not supposed to teach and they just  do the research work. I think that’s why I was able to churn out more than 14 cases in a very small span.

TAPMI provides holistic development of faculties by providing a research-focused environment and encouraging students in the research projects. I feel fortunate to work with TAPMI, one of the leading B school in India.

Inkpothub:  What are your long-term plans? Do you like to be considered yourself as a case writer or pure journal article writer?

Prof. Amol: As a researcher, both are equally important.

Case writing gives me a different edge in terms of teaching like presenting it to the world and also connecting with students. This kind of exercise eventually helps lots of students while discussing the company’s problem or the industry’s problem. They then relate to the case will able to find the solution. I believe that to be a good case teacher you should write cases.

The research paper writing and publishing is the other side of the coin. It is necessary and essential. In 2019, I published in four B category journals.

So that is also going on simultaneously. And it’s quiet interesting.
