Inkpothub: Tell us about your research journey.
Dr. Harish Garg: I have had a clear vision of what career I would like to pursue since I earned my master’s degree in July 2008. After I completed my Master’s degree in Mathematics, I started my research from January 2009 when I joined a Ph.D. program at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India. I completed my Ph.D. degree in July 2013 from the Department of Mathematics. After earning my degree and to continue my research journey, I joined the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, Punjab, India in July 2013 and recapitulate out my research work. Since July 2013, I am continuously moved out research and their makings are published in the form of the research papers. So far, I had published 220+ research articles out of which 206+ are in International Journals (SCIE: 175+), 07 book chapters and 07 in the international conferences.
Inkpothub: Which area of research interests you?
Dr. Harish Garg: I work in the area of Fuzzy Decision-making; Soft Computing; Fuzzy Optimization; Expert Systems; Reliability theory, soft sets, Multi-objective optimization, and multiple criteria decision making.
Inkpothub: You have achieved 7k+ citations. How do you feel your research work is taken up by many other researchers?
Dr. Harish Garg: Yes, it sounds good when we saw our work which is directly or indirectly impacts the other researcher’s work. To achieve good citations for your work, at least two factors play a crucial role. The first one is the novel idea presented in a research paper in a very good manner with deeper analysis. The second one is to publish a work in more reputed and well-established journals so that readers can attract your findings more quickly. I must appreciate all my collaborates and Ph.D. students who worked day and night with me to achieve these 7k+ citations.
Inkpothub: How do you inculcate your research in your classroom teaching?
Dr. Harish Garg: Young students are always playing a vital role in research and society. Their enthusiasm and energy utilized in the right direction are always beneficial for society. The main focus, to motivate young researchers and students in a classroom, is to tell their difference between problem-solving and problem-finding. I usually ask my students and motivate them as instead of problem-solving, look at the world by finding gaps to fill using problem-finding. Problem-finding is equivalent to problem discovery. In most of the classes, undergraduate and postgraduate, I usually allow the students to think deeply, ask critical questions and apply creative ways to solve each problem, instead of just believing in a single way.
Inkpothub: How was your experience so far as an Associate Editor -(SCI-Journal) and (Scopus Index-Journal)?
Dr. Harish Garg: With the passage of time, more and more people are now involved in the research and writing papers, so the role of the Associate Editors, as well as Editors, are becoming more important. I always love to face a new challenge in the research. To join as an Associate Editor of several SCIE journals, it is a kind of new responsibility and challenges so as to get the fair decision on each manuscript. Initially, it was very difficult, due to involvement in teaching as well as research, to handle so many manuscripts at a single time but as time passes, it becomes easier. I feel that the role of the Associate Editor is very crucial in the field of research, as it is wholly responsible for the manuscript that was either accepted or rejected. Many times, different reviewers have a different opinion on a single paper but as an Editor of the journal and the Handling Editor of the paper, it is our responsibility that we should read the each assigned paper deeply and identify whether the reviewer’s comments actually match with the quality of the work or not. To this extend, I enjoy this work and take it as a new challenge, responsibility and learning daily.
Inkpothub: Writing research papers is a big and long task. It is time-consuming. What keeps you motivated?
Dr. Harish Garg: Passion for research that keeps me motivated. In the research journey, one needs a regular dose of motivation and inspiration from time to time. The motivation behind writing each new paper is the appreciation given by the researchers from all around the globe, in the form of either citation or by email. Yes, it is true that writing a research paper is a very big and long task. But simultaneously, a constant focus on the topic, discussion with the experts and continuously thinking on a target are the most important to achieve the goals. Also, once you can get a deep knowledge of the subject then writing a research paper is not time-consuming. The main thing to remember, while writing the research article, is to express your main idea of the work in a very good manner so that readers can understand it completely and then appreciate it.
Inkpothub: Any message or guidelines you would like to give to aspiring scholars in your field?
Dr. Harish Garg: I would like to advise young scholars to do good research in their capacity. Research is a steady process. Keep more motivation and dedication towards the work. Instead of fixing your target to one or two papers in a year, remember 365 days in a year and plenty of hours. Each new researcher/student can fully utilize it to present new ideas and papers in the top reputed journals. Every time you publish an article, challenge yourself to do even better next time. The key role played in the research is not the knowledge, but the constant dedication towards the work. I believe that a scholar must adopt 3P’s factors (i.e., Patience, Persistence & Perseverance) to do “pathbreaking” research. With these qualities, experience, and understanding a researcher can clearly make a mark.
