We often get a lot of questions on which management conference, one should attend. So, we have come up with the list of conferences in the earlier blog. Also, we have section on the website, called Research conferences, in which we have come up with the list of conferences, in the earlier blog. Also, we have a section on the website called Research conferences, in which we have compiled the top conferences in India and outside India, which a scholar must attend.
These conferences and experiences are compiled from the journey’s of the top researchers from India. The few questions which come to mind, before planning for any conference are:
1. When to go for attending a conference?
Always channelise and narrow- down your focus on the productive work, instead of wandering here and there. One must also attend the management conference, in which they are presenting and must not attend the ones, whose themes are not matching to your research interest (research topics).
2. How to choose the right management conference?
Always learn from the experiences and CVs of other people. Compile a list from the researchers you follow for your research purpose and get the best conference list. Please select one out of this list.
3. Should you attend larger or smaller management conference?
As a PhD student, you must choose the conference which will help you make the best connection in the industry. This will help you gain experience over the years and you can start attending smaller conferences. Thus, once you have a job, you can make connections, in a close knit. So, preferably focus on the larger conferences at start of your career and on the smaller after completing the research.

Also, you can take the guidance from your seniors. If you have never written a paper on the theme of the conference, then you can team up with your senior. You will also become a good friend of the researchers you collaborate with in this process. In fact, always prefer collaborations and start writing conference proposals as the lead author. This, process can be more efficient as you can write a proposal and do at any pace.
5. Does location matter?
Always keep location on high priority for PhD students. Do not go to exotic conferences, just because you want to travel. Keep tourism a secondary consideration, but not the main aim of a conference.
6. Avoid too many management conferences
It is always very tempting to write conference proposals, but not follow them up by writing papers out of them. Actions must be taken over a plan. We often have too many conferences, but never prepare a research paper out of them because with time interest shift from one topic to another. Always a conference must be attended to get a powerful impact out of them. Otherwise, they must be avoided. A conference must be attended to get a powerful impact out of it because in that case you will keep counting the number of peer-reviewed journal papers and the conference presentations. If number varies a lot, you need to re-change priorities.
7. Management conference proceedings
You do not need to present the papers that are at the work-in progress or publishable stage. Also, you will not be able to submit a journal after that. Always avoid conferences that mandate you to submit the papers for conference proceedings.
8. Try new management conference
You can master a particular kind of presentation and keep writing proposals on that or you can go for the new ones by learning new skills. This will help you to learn new work and save you from attending any particular conference.
9. Submit more papers than you should
You can submit more papers, but after the acceptance of few papers as cap limit would be applied. You can also withdraw the additional papers, if you get more acceptances than allowed. Never ever submit the same proposal to multiple strands (people) at the same conference.
10. What are the benefits of conferences?
Being the first and a presenting author, you get many benefits. Generally, the people who attend your talk can be interested in your advisers work. Thus, conferences can give you that platform which can help you get a feedback on your research and make connections. You can always look for a job, collaborator or a home for your paper.
11. Why you cannot go to the management conference?
Always get the idea of the proposal review from the team members. Also, get the idea of the work that gets presented. Conferences are also looking for ad-hoc reviewers and appreciate the helpers, and you get to review better by looking at the other people’s work. Keep a track of the journal papers reviewing team as early as possible. Try to find the journal papers and keep working with the review team as well. You will learn many new things from the same paper, and if you have a particular journal in mind, write to editor as well.
12. Note down the management conference funding ideas
Always look for travel grants and scholarships to fund for conference travels, full or partial. Keep adding all this to your CV as well. Many such CVs are available for scholarships and graduate level ECRs. Developing countries have also the same scenario, where we are awarded from the conference organisers. Proactively keep looking for the competitive conferences who can fund the opportunities.
13. The reason for which you should not go to management conference:
If you are in the crucial year of defending your thesis, then you can avoid attending conferences as taking temporary breaks from conferences can be fun. You will also meet new people, which has both positive and negative sides. This can be both time and money consuming with very high energy required to work on a task.
