Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments, seven inter-disciplinary academic centres and five schools covering all the major engineering, science, healthcare, management and humanities disciplines, offering B.Tech., B.Des., M.A., M.Des., M.Tech., M.Sc., MBA and PhD programmes.

History

IIT Guwahati is the only academic institution in India that occupied a place among the top 100 world universities – under 50 years of age – ranked by the London-based Times Higher Education (THE) in the year 2014 and continues to maintain its superior position even today in various International Rankings. 

IIT Guwahati gained a rank of 41 globally in the ‘Research Citations per Faculty’ category and an overall 395 rank in the QS World University Rankings 2022 released recently. IIT Guwahati has retained the 7th position among the best engineering institutions in the country in the ‘India Rankings 2021’ declared by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Union Ministry of Education. IIT Guwahati has been also ranked 2nd in the ‘Swachhata Ranking’ conducted by the Govt. of India. Recently, IIT Guwahati has been ranked as the top-ranked University in 2019 for IT developers by HackerRank in the Asia-Pacific region.

About School of Business IIT Guwahati

The School of Business has the vision of promoting multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary education to inculcate the ethos of techno-entrepreneurship. The School provides an ecosystem where students with sound technical backgrounds can equip themselves with business management expertise and expand their skill sets.

• In each discipline, specific specializations and research areas are also advertised for Dec 2022 session. Further, some departments offered seats under Project Mode and for JDP with IIT(BHU). The respective areas and the projects are announced under the menu “PhD Admissions, Dec 2022”.

Eligibility criteria

PhD Application Process

1. Applications for PhD programme should be submitted only online through the Application Portal. Before submission of applications, please go through the information provided on this admission website carefully.
2. Candidates need to register only once on the Application Portal. Under the same login, candidates can submit applications to multiple disciplines. Application fees should be paid separately for each application.
3. Submission of online applications is a three-step process. Unless all three steps are completed, the application will not be treated as complete.
   1. Step-1: Personal information including the educational qualifications and uploading the respective documents.
   2. Step 2: Selection of the programme (PhD or Special-PhD), selection of Discipline and opting for the Areas and/or Projects.
   3. Step-3: Online payment of application fee.
4. For submission of applications to different disciplines, the candidates have to repeat step-2 and step 3.
5. If a particular department is offering seats under Project mode or JDP with IIT(BHU), candidates can opt for the respective projects when choosing the areas within the same application for the department.
6. However, if a candidate wanted to apply for UGC/CSIR Special-PhD scheme (offered by BSBE, Physics and Chemistry), the candidate has to submit a separate application.

• Applications of candidates who are complete in all respects will be considered in the selection process.
• The Institute reserves the right to consider a limited number of candidates for the selection process. Such shortlisting will be based on the performance in GATE/NET/CEED, grades/marks in the qualifying degree examination and/or other educational qualifications starting from Class 10.
• For PhD programme, the shortlisting and selection may be done specialization-wise by the respective department/school/centre.
• The selection process involves the performance of candidates in the written test and/or interview conducted in various stages in a particular mode as decided by the respective department/school/centre.
• Applicants have to visit this website and the websites of respective departments/schools/centres regularly for information regarding shortlisting and selection of candidates. No personalized information can be expected in this regard. IIT Guwahati will not be responsible for the delayed responses from the applicants.
• The results of shortlisting and selection shall be announced on the application portal. The applicants may log in to the portal and check the results.
• For any queries on the shortlisting/selections, the applicants can contact the DPPC/SPPC/CPPC Secretary or the Head of the Department/School/Centre.
